About the novel

A Witch’s Fate – Witches of Lane County – Brand new paranormal romance by Jody A. Kessler

Tori Morgan is a modern-day witch from Lane County—and she’s cursed. Falling in love is not in Tori’s astrological chart, her cards, or anywhere else in her plans for the future. Falling for a skeptic who debunks the paranormal for a living is even less likely.

Leif Andersen doesn’t believe in magic or the paranormal. When he’s hired to investigate the mysterious death of former Hollywood actress and humanitarian, Delana Smootz, Leif is led straight to Tori Morgan’s door. There’s no way he’s going to fall for Tori or her woo-woo mysticism, no matter how magical she feels in his arms.

Sparks fly and an undeniable attraction sizzles as Tori and Leif travel the globe in search of a suspect and the answers to Delana’s supernatural downfall.

Here’s a few extra details you may want to know about A Witch’s Fate:

Is the magic in the book out of the closet, so to speak, or is the world of magic still underground?

The existence of magic, and the witch and wizard community, is still underground. Even though the witches live among the general population, their magical abilities are not practiced openly. The world in A Witch’s Fate is set the present day, but there is an entire magical community living, working, and interacting along-side the non-magical people.  This type of world building is comparable to the Harry Potter series or the Harry Dresden novels – two of my favorite series by the way. One of the differences in the Witches of Lane County series is that A Witch’s Fate contains steamy romance, and the murder mystery is the subplot.

What is the setting for the novel?

A Witch’s Fate is mainly set in Portland, Oregon. Portland is where Tori Morgan – the heroine of A Witch’s Fate – lives and works as a psychic/medium/healer for private clients.  She’s a Morgan witch from Lane County, OR.  The family home is on the coast about 3.5 hours from the city.  The women in her family have endured a 500-year-old curse that makes marriage an unachievable dream.  Tori moved to the city and away from her childhood home and magical family members as soon as she could.  She loves her family, but she doesn’t want to live in the country. She’s definitely a city girl.  The main characters, Tori and Leif, also take a trip around the globe to a resort hotel in the mountains of the Ukraine in search of a suspect.

What was the inspiration for the novel?

A Witch’s Fate was born from Heart of the Secret – A Witches of Lane County Novella, and it’s a fun sexy novel full of magic, mystery, and romance.

Tori first made an appearance in Heart of the Secret. She was a feisty, hot tempered, and skilled witch, and an intriguing character from the very moment I envisioned her.

In Heart of the Secret, Tori returns home to Lane County to escape a precarious and messy situation with the man she is currently seeing in Portland. I immediately started imagining Tori’s story. She’s determined to never marry or get involved in a serious relationship because of her family curse. I knew there would be someone who could crack her resolve and warm her heart to the idea of dating exclusively — and maybe even falling in love.  *In walks Leif Andersen- the extremely sexy paranormal investigator and skeptic.*

**If you don’t already know what happens between these two fiery characters, you’ll have to read the novel to see how Leif wins Tori’s heart.

Thanks for visiting with me today. If you have any questions, please post ‘em in the comments and I’ll answer as soon as I can!

Cheers and happy reading,

Jody A. Kessler

“Exciting, steamy, romance that’s heartfelt and entertaining!” – New York Times Bestselling Author Nancy Segovia

Treasure rolled over and admired, not for the first time, Court’s hard, delicious deltoid muscles. They capped broad shoulders and flowed seamlessly down to meet bulging biceps. His muscles elicited a baser need to climb on top of him, squeeze him between her thighs and stroke every inch of his incredible arms—and the rest of him too. His triceps were ripped. His forearms could have belonged to Popeye. She glanced at his chest and almost drooled at the sight of the smooth bronze pecs and rippling abs.
Court caught her attention the moment he entered the bar last night. She’d been chatting with friends and he quickly became the game of the evening. She supposed she’d won. In all honesty, her girlfriends hadn’t been as driven to win the prize as strongly as she had. Treasure knew going to Paradiso would more than likely provide a new boy-toy, or two, and she thought she was in the mood to fool around with someone new.
She hadn’t exactly meant to end up in bed with him, but she hadn’t been opposed to it either. Now, she was in Court’s brand new condo wondering where her clothes were while trying not to berate herself for sleeping with someone she just met. What did she even know about this guy? He told her he was new in town, which explained why she and her friends had never seen him before. He said he moved to Reno for a job and his last name was Prescott. Court Prescott. That should have been a huge flag to their sexual incompatibility. His name sounded ridiculously pretentious to Treasure even though he didn’t come across that way. And who names their kid Court anyway? It reminded her of basketball or tennis. Which brought on the image of balls and that made her snicker as she mentally renamed him Court Tennis Balls Prescott. Yeah, balls had definitely been involved last night, she thought, and knew it was juvenile, but ball jokes never got old. Except for actual old balls and that was unpleasant to think about.
Lying next to him, Treasure slid Court the side eye. This wasn’t the first time she’d done something like this, but it was the first time she regretted it with such whole-hearted distaste. He’d been a sloppy and unrefined lover. The thought of kissing him made her queasy. His lips were beautiful but had no finesse. She should have known after the first kiss sex with this man would be disappointing, but she’d pursued him and kept the foreplay going with the hope that the night would get better with a little coaching. It hadn’t. She cringed remembering the lackluster roll in the sack and his less than stellar performance. For all his good looks, the man had no moves. Was it the tequila shots? Some men couldn’t handle their liquor and their women in the same night. In her own experience, she thought alcohol improved her sex drive, lowered her inhibitions, and generally made naked encounters with men much more exciting. She’d have to rethink this approach. Either way, in her current state of undress, the insufficient stimulation after they left Paradiso clung to her like slime-coated cellophane.
She inched across the mattress and paused, listening for a change in Court’s breathing. If she could sneak away without waking him, it would save her a headache. She never wanted to see him again. Uggg, she groaned to herself when he rolled over and his hand brushed her side.
His eyelids fluttered before opening. The whites of his eyes were bloodshot. Treasure swallowed and wished she had pretended to be asleep. A sly grin crept across his face. His body had originally attracted her, but those damned dimples sealed the deal.
The dimples reminded her of Bodie and sent her mind reeling with vivid memories of her friend and work partner. When you watched Bodie smile, you had to search for the dimples, like they were a secret hiding just below the surface. Bodie’s dimples weren’t as deep as Court’s, but Bodie’s were sexier. She wished she could see them now, damn it. Why was Bodie always on her mind?

“Hi. I won our bet. You owe me a fantasy.”
“Hi to you too,” Bodie said on the other end of the line. “Where are you?”
“Granite Lake. I, umm,” Shivers crept over her skin after mentioning Granite Lake with Bodie’s voice in her ear. She wanted a replay of their night together. She needed him triply bad after her experience with Court.
“Hmm….” he hummed into the phone.
She didn’t know if any sexual innuendo existed in the smooth purr coming out of him, or if it was the sound of curiosity being answered, but her inner thighs shivered. The phone beeped its low battery warning. Tamping down her lust, she said, “It’s not as great as it sounds. I have a mess to clean up at my dad’s old place. And I have a disaster at work to handle when I return to civilization. Cheer me up before my phone dies.”
“No charger?”
“Uh-uh. I rushed to get to the mountains and accidentally left it behind.”
“What’s going on at the ambulance barn?”
“I don’t want to get into it.”
“That bad?” he asked.
“Sort of.” And worse, she thought to herself. “Working with you was a thousand times better.”
“About that…” he said.
Treasure filled the gap. “You’re a total punk. A paramedic demigod compared to what I’ve been dealing with.” She didn’t want to rehash her time spent with Court. Luckily Bodie shifted gears.
“Boosting up my ego again? You better watch yourself Treasure or I’m going to think you’re a nice girl or something.”
“I can be nice. When I want to.” Treasure walked into the apartment and curled up on the couch.
“You may not be so kind when I tell you my news.”
“I’m not sure I can handle any more bad news today. Can’t you just tell me your naughtiest fantasy before my phone dies? I need something tantalizing to get me through the night.”
“You’re so not ready for one of my fantasies.”
“Now you have to tell me. I promise I can handle it.”
“I don’t think so. Besides, I didn’t agree you won,” he said.
“I did. But since you object, I’ll tell you a secret.”
She almost said, ‘I can’t wait to see you again. You’ve totally ruined my chances at ever having a worthwhile orgasm and you need to help me out immediately.’ Instead, she bit her lip. They weren’t a couple and she didn’t know what he thought about jumping into a relationship. “I miss you, Bodie. Work was pure hell this week.”
He stayed silent for a beat too long. Treasure regretted her confession. Speaking her emotions was difficult. She’d rather have a root canal in most cases. The secret she shared wouldn’t be hard for any normal person to say aloud, but it felt a little too real for Treasure. In the next moment, she erased her regret. She wanted to be truer to herself where Bodie was concerned.
“Now it’s my turn. I miss you too. I’m fantasizing about a hot day.” He paused again.
Treasure’s dour outlook perked up a bit. She liked when he said “fantasize,” and “hot.”
“You and me,” he continued. “I want to take the boat out on the lake. You up for it?”
“Definitely,” she said.
“Good.”
He didn’t continue like she hoped.
“That’s it? That’s your fantasy?”
“No. Of course there’s more. It has to be hot enough to swim. We’ll bring beer. Good beer. IPA beer. And chips and donuts. Why you like those awful mini powdered donuts is beyond me.”
She smiled into the phone. “And mini cherry pie.”
“Yeah, those too. And I can’t wait to put my hands on you…” he paused for affect.
Treasure held her breath imagining his hands on her body.
“And push your ass into the water.”
“Nice. Real nice,” she said sarcastically. “Your fantasy is lacking…umm,” she paused, searching for the right words. “Zing. Zest. Color. Sexiness. Give me something to warm me up and keep me company while I sleep.”
“What are you talking about? My fantasy is perfect.” He sounded offended. “I’ll let you wrap your hands around my…fishing pole if you want.”
“Fishing pole better be code for something else, Bodie Everett,” she warned, and laughed when she heard him snickering.

A Publishing Mistake Made Right – When Amazon Screws Up

My sincere apologies if Amazon sent you the wrong book file of Dark Fates.

Authors sometimes band together and bring readers incredible box set collections. We do this for many different reasons. Personally, I like collaborating with other authors in my genre (or similar genres) because it’s fun, and working with a variety of brilliant authors teaches me a great deal about marketing and promotions. The readers get an unbelievable deal and the opportunity to sample many authors’ work for mere pennies! The authors benefit by reaching a broader audience. Everyone wins.

So when 3 months of hard pre-order work is squashed by Amazon making a ridiculous mistake and sending out nearly 4 thousand wrong book files, everyone loses.

But wait, there’s more. I won’t let one soul-crushing moment from Amazon delivering the wrong book to my precious and appreciated readers ruin the day –

Book Reviews? – Plus A Content Warning – When We’re Entwined

So…I wrote a certain book last year.

It happened. I actually write sometimes when I’m not on facebook – (darn internet is always distracting me.)

Here’s the thing:

This particular book triggers the ever-loving crap out of people – in nearly bi-polaresque emotional latitudes. — I did not see this coming when I hit the publish button.

Here are some gems from the reviews the book has received:

***

“This story was so special. It moved me in a way a book hasn’t for a while, and I’m so glad I picked it up.”

***

“I found her character (Caspar) and also how Jasper responded to her advances to be incredibly offensive and really don’t believe that any young readers should read a book in which a diverse character is hated on and also poorly represented.”

***

“I have conflicted feelings about this book.”

***

“The girl we start out with is not the girl we end up with – and I love that.”

***

“This is a beautifully written book & a wonderful story…”

***

“What I loved about this book is the way the author used metaphors, and quotes to give a very unique aspect to this story. Loved how the author really went into how a young adult (19 year old, don’t confuse with genre) thinks, and rationalizes when they have lived in bad circumstances in life, and finding themselves with some romance without it being the main focus.”

~~~
One reviewer highly suggested I put a content/trigger warning on the book description because of the abuse scenes. (They’re not graphic, but emotional and horrible none the less.)
~~~

Have I done my job as a writer and made the reader feel something? — even if it’s bad? Did I fail miserably by not writing to market and stepping away from my other genres?

Do these mixed reviews make me question whether or not I shouldn’t have published this book in the 1st place?

Does anyone read coming-of-age edgy novels that push emotional boundaries and ask questions about life from a NA perspective?

I have my answers, but my answers are not your answers. That’s what is amazing and wonderful about fiction. Everyone perceives things in their own beautiful and unique way.

Here is my Novel Warning:

Do not read this book if you are sensitive about dysfunctional relationships and abuse scenes.

Do not read this book if you do not like coming-of-age stories.

Do not read this book if you think I have a LGBTQ agenda (I absolutely do not, btw. I couldn’t care less about the gender of the person you choose to include in your life and relationships. The fact that ONE character is bisexual does not mean I am representing a community of people. smh)

Do not read this book if you don’t like the writing style or the POV.

Do not read this book if you don’t like quotes. — there’s quotes and metaphors throughout the novel.

And you should absolutely not read this book if you can’t watch a young woman make bad choices, learn how to correct them and start her life over again.

READ this book if any of the above reviews sound like something you would enjoy!

I seriously appreciate all honest reviews! But, wow, this book in particular is making me want a pseudonym. <3

Did I write my heart in this novel? Yes, I did. Does that mean everyone will enjoy it? No, it doesn’t. Did I make an attempt to entwine wisdom, courage, creativity, unconditional love, forgiveness, passion, confusion, heartache, life lessons, entertainment, and so much more into this book? Yes, that was my goal.

When We're Entwined_Resized Ecover_Final - 620 x 930

When We’re Entwined is a gripping, emotional modern day adventure with a glimpse of alternative lifestyles in America as one vibrant, young aerial gymnast realizes cruelty and injustice can be outweighed by kindness, humor, and compassion with the help of a most unlikely and wildly colorful cast of characters.”

Wishing you all the best,

Jody

A Fistful of Evil by Rebecca Chastain

Madison’s new job would be perfect, if not for all the creatures trying to eat her soul…

Madison Fox just learned that her ability to see souls is more than a sight: It’s a weapon for fighting evil. The only problem is she doesn’t have a clue what she’s doing.

On the positive side, her money problems are over and her coworker is smoking hot. On the negative side, evil creatures now actively hunt her, and deadly experiences are becoming the norm.

When she thinks it couldn’t get worse, a powerful evil sets up shop at a local hotel’s video game convention, and it’s got its eye on more than the gaming geeks—it’s hungry for Madison’s soul. Madison needs to become an expert illuminant enforcer overnight to save her job, her region…and her life.

A Fistful of Evil is a fresh new adult urban fantasy from the author of the well-loved Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles. For a wildly imaginative story packed full of supernatural horrors, kick-butt action, and laugh-out-loud moments, you won’t want to miss this series starter.

Excerpt from A Fistful of Evil:

I blinked. Primordium replaced color, daylight, and familiarity. I braced my hands on my knees and stared at the gray dirt at my feet until gravity rebalanced itself. I took a quick peek at the sky. The cerulean cloudless expanse had been swapped with black—solid, unrelieved black. I could still feel the sun on my face, though I couldn’t see it in the sky. For all I knew, I was looking straight at it.
I shuddered and made a point not to look up again. Instead, I scanned the firehouse. There were people upstairs and something small and white just inside the bay doors. A cat? I turned to look at Rose. She glowed a pretty, opaque white. It was nice to know that not everyone who worked for the CIA looked like they had a sun stuck up their butt. Unlike Kyle, Rose’s features looked like they were cast out of pure white marble, not radiating light. She was also in possession of one of the cleanest souls I’d seen in a long time, aside from my own and Kyle’s. Even if I was dangerously deep in a world I knew nothing about, it was reassuring that I was on the good side.
Now why hadn’t I thought to look at my boss’s soul?
Because you’re trying not to use this sight, remember?
Too late for that.
I scanned the field. Only the blackberry brambles glowed. They were bright white, a mound of light with tendrils stretching across the dead field. Normally blackberry bushes tended to look sinister with all their thorns and the tenacious, mindless way they choked out other plant life. Now they looked like a beautiful oasis in a field of death.
I knew there had to be wildlife moving among the dead grasses, but the dark stalks were too dense for the small white bodies of rodents and birds to be visible from a distance.
I was about to switch back to normal vision when I saw it. Close to the edge of the fire station, hopping along unaware of my presence, was an imp. It was a little field mouse of an imp; I would have missed it if I hadn’t been looking so hard.
“There’s an imp over there.” I pointed.
“Oh, goodie. Maybe I can peek in a window. And maybe they’ll be having a naked wrestling contest.”
Rose sashayed across the gravel, heading straight for the imp.
“You can’t see it, right?”
“Nope. Take your time.”
I trailed after her. In its own dark and sinister way, the imp was remarkably cute. The ones in the restaurant had looked like chinchillas, and this one was a baby. Adorable. I flashed back on the prominent memory of the creatures jumping at Kyle. Maybe I’d overreacted. He hadn’t seemed the least bit frightened. Maybe they were just cute. All I would have to do was…whatever Kyle had done. Squint or something. Instinct would kick in and, poof, no more imp.
Unfortunately, the only instinct babbling in my head was telling me I needed to go the other way, not toward the harmless-looking fluff of evil.

Three Wishes by Lisa Manifold

What I wouldn’t give for a do-over…

That’s the overwhelming thought for Tibby Holloway after a long night of eating too much ice cream and going over her missed chances.

She wakes up the next morning to find a free-lancing djinn sitting on her bed who makes her what could be the offer of a lifetime. He’ll give her three chances-three wishes-to go back and change her life. She can change her career, find the man she loves, go back and do it right this time.

But there’s a catch.

She can’t stay in any of the new lives her wishes create. Once she’s gone back three times, the djinn will decide where she ends up.

To find out what might have been, she has to give up control over what will be.

Would it be better to not even know?

That is a chance she’ll have to take-if she wants to have her Three Wishes.

Excerpt from Three Wishes:

I walked into the conference room. This would be a piece of cake. The dispute wasn’t all that big of a deal, although our client was making one out of it. Like all Granddad’s friends, everything was a big deal. Probably why they were all, to a man, rich as Croesus. Maybe I needed to get that mindset.

Then I laughed and shrugged such a thought away. I’d go insane. Kind of like most of Granddad’s friends.

“Mr. Barrington?” I held out my hand to the older gentleman in the room. He stood with two younger men, and he turned when I said his name.

“I’m Tabitha Holloway, and this is my partner, Bryant Higgs. We represent—”

“Tibby?”

Two different voices called me by my nickname. Both held tones of shock and surprise. I opened my mouth to respond when I looked, really looked at who was talking to me.

Oh my god. I felt faint suddenly when I realized who they were.

Just as suddenly, I looked around for the telltale flash of glitter. I was going to end up back in my room four years earlier. I could feel it.

Lisa Manifold is fortunate to live in the amazing state of Colorado with her husband, two kids, two dogs, and one offended cat. She enjoys skiing and carting kids and dogs to wherever they need to go, and she adores “treasure hunting” at local thrift stores. Her other hobbies include costuming within her favorite fandoms and periods.

Lisa is very (probably overly) involved with her regional writers’ organization, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. To her great surprise and delight, Lisa was awarded the RMFW 2016 Independent Writer of the Year award. She is the author of the Sisters Of The Curse series, the Heart of the Djinn series, The Realm series, the latter two which have books releasing in 2017, and a new series called The Aumahnee Prophecy.
