Review – January Black by Wendy S. Russo

Fantastic! Intelligent! Sweet! & Well written!

JanuaryBlackCover

A novel should make you feel something. It should spark your imagination and grab your heartstrings. January Black does not disappoint and has so much more to offer than the casual page turner! It is a thought provoking puzzle intertwined with history, sweet first love, family secrets, and political dissension.

Matty Ducayn is an upper-class teen in the city of Aventine. After being expelled from school for outwitting his instructor, he is given a task by King Hadrian. Matty is quickly entangled in a behind the scenes, political exploitation of his intelligence, naiveté, willingness to bend, if not break the rules and laws that govern his world, all while falling deeply in love with Iris.

Although the novel is set in the future, I feel that the story is relevant to the present. The scenes are descriptive but not wordy. The future technology is imaginative but not farfetched. The characters are well written and relatable. The dialog extremely enjoyable. It is a fascinating tale where seekers of freedom and a new beginning end up with a government that sees and controls everything – or at least tries to.

Is Matty being unfairly manipulated, or is he part of a greater scheme for a better future? You’ll have to read it to find out.

I would like to add one humble note: I do not care for anyone to push their thoughts, opinions, or beliefs on me and this novel DOESN’T come across that way at all. It is a story. Well told and inspiring.

My only regret about January Black is that I didn’t read it sooner.

Review – Rhythm of My Heart

Book Review:  Rhythm o f My Heart by Kemberlee Shortland

Rhythm of My Heart

Being that I am mildly obsessed with Ireland, love pubs, and cherish live music there was no way this novel wouldn’t resonate with me. That being said, you never knows exactly what kind of world you’re about to enter when cracking open the spine of a new novel (and never having read anything from the author before either.)

Let me tell you, my intuition and good feelings upon reading the back cover copy did not let me down. Rhythm of My Heart is an endearing romantic tale infused with the Irish culture, language, landscapes, and heart. Plus so much more.

Eilis Kennedy has spent the majority of her adult life focused on her career – discovering new talent for Eireann Records of Dublin. While scouting out blues guitarist, Keiran Vaughan, Eilis has a thrilling and somewhat alarming instant attraction to the handsome and rogue guitar player. She isn’t the only one who feels it – Keiran is equally drawn to her. So much so that they feel an intense visceral connection to one another.

It wouldn’t be a romance novel without a little drama, and kissing of course, and Rhythm of My Heart doesn’t disappoint. We find out quickly that Eilis is a little untrusting of men and relationships, and for what she’s been through, no one would blame her. Her character is well written and believable. Kieran is a gorgeous hunky Irishman – who happens to play guitar – but also has a history that makes you see him as a real person. He’s not perfect, but he also has sweetness and charm that any maiden in her right mind would swoon over – I also can’t leave out his stormy blue eyes and dark hair.

My favorite part of the novel is when an unexpected change in plans places Kieran and Eilis alone together in a traditional Irish country cottage. The excitement, emotion, and the drama during their stay was fabulously written and fun to read. Overall the plot moves along at a nice pace and kept me happily turning pages. There is some suspense and action, particularly at the end of the novel, involving Eilis’s boss that had me reading well into the wee hours of the night.

Rhythm of My Heart is an engaging romance that is well written with memorable characters. The dialogue flowed effortlessly and the settings couldn’t have been more realistic. If you would like to read an entertaining romance full of music and love in an Irish setting, then I highly recommend this novel.

Publication Date: December 15, 2013

Publisher: Crescent Moon Press

Excerpt:

I didn’t have a single remembrance before the age of eight. The first day of kindergarten, losing my first tooth, my first best friend—these memories vanished into an unexplained chasm and were still missing ten years later.
My mother would never explain the root of this anomaly to me. The only thing she’d say is that losing my father that year did something irreversible to my brain. A crater opened up inside of me and every early memory fell into oblivion.
I had eight years with my father before he died—but I didn’t have one memory of him. I didn’t know what it felt like to be inside of his embrace. I had no recollection of the scent I breathed in when he gathered me up into his arms. I had to imagine the memories through a haphazard collage of photographs and videos left behind.
My father was murdered in a fumbled burglary attempt at our home. My mother told me I should be grateful we weren’t home that night because we would be six feet under right alongside him. The ice in her voice made me wonder if she blamed him in some way for being killed.
Mere weeks after we laid him to rest, we moved two hours away from our New Jersey hometown to Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania. A visit to his final resting place was a rare occurrence and we were estranged from my father’s side of the family. The part that I always had a hard time wrapping my head around was that my father’s unsolved murder never plagued my mother. She never sought out the killer to exact justice for taking a father away from his young daughter.
She insisted we needed a fresh start. And for ten years, I lived a seemingly normal teenage existence with the exception of my unique case of amnesia. My mother never brought me to a team of doctors to analyze my brain and she has never pushed me to remember. I comprehended the oddities surrounding my life, but we’d lived this way for so long that it became normal.
Until the day that everything changed.

When the evil spirit of Jumlin returns with his army of Offspring, the Earth Spirits are summoned to protect the Lakota. Unbeknownst to Charli, these Earth Spirits are a sacred secret. So she probably shouldn’t have spied from behind a rock when they shifted from their animal forms, she shouldn’t have taken pictures, and she definitely shouldn’t have gotten caught. Now a hostile prisoner, Charli is forced to walk a long journey to reach the one man who can erase the knowledge of the Earth Spirits’ existence from her mind.

Naturally, Charli thinks all she needs to do is keep her big mouth shut, get her memory erased, and go home. But Jumlin’s Offspring are stalking her. Since no one can explain this unusual behavior, it becomes imperative to enter the Other World–a place where the Lakota have lived traditionally and without foreign oppression (but not without menacing dragons). Aside from being kidnapped, whisked away to a foreign world, hunted, and forced to live amongst strangers, Charli must come to terms with a new nuisance: she’s falling for one of her abductors.

EXCERPT PG:

Marteen didn’t suspect the heavy dose of Hemlock she grated into his tea and then let steep a good long time before bringing it to him.  When he began puking on himself and ofwar_long_adsweating like a pig a few moments later, he called out for her.  Being the dutiful Wife of a God, Maggie came to him, she sympathized with him, helped him into his bed, and sat with him until he slipped into a coma.  Certain he would not wake and that most of the other Druids were in their beds, Maggie grabbed her father’s ring and a cloth sack. She filled it with food, and ran for her life with no thought as to where she was going or how she would get there.  Maggie only knew that, as much as her heart cried out for it, she couldn’t go home to the Golden Lands and put the entire village in danger.  Surely when Cernunnos found her gone, the Golden Lands would be the first place he would search.  If he didn’t find her, if they honestly didn’t know anything about her escape, then he would have no choice but to leave them in peace.

Or she hoped.

Emerging from the tunnel five hundred yards past the keep and just at the tree line to the woods, she looked up at the night sky where a bright red star caught her eye.  She recognized it as Mars, the planet named for the Roman God of War.  Maggie focused on it, drawing strength and determination from it, hoping that the old God would lend his favor to her for one night.  Faster than the wind, she ran toward it, pretending she was climbing some magickal staircase to the stars.  The Mars twinkled, as though it was winking at her, acknowledging her, making her run faster.  The faster she ran the brighter it glowed. She didn’t stop running nor did she take her eyes off the twinkling red glow until well past dawn when its light was visible to her even the growing light of day.

By the time she fell to the ground from hunger and exhaustion the golden belt sliced deep into the soft flesh of her inner thighs and hips.  The wounds were gaping and jagged as flaps of skin stuck to the gold while her blood drying upon it stained it a dark crimson.  Finding shelter beneath a large willow tree she dared to eat a large hunk of soda bread she’d stolen from Marteen’s kitchen.  The nourishment slowly brought her heart rate to a normal pace as she looked around, noticing a small village some distance below her.  The village was a harbor and there was a three-masted sailboat tied to the dock.  Maggie didn’t know where it was going and she didn’t care.  All she knew was that she was going to be on it.  Once she was, when the boat left the dock and it was out on the big blue sea, she’d be safe from Cernunnos.  She’d sail off to some place where they never heard of Feys and she would start a new life.

Scars of The Bifrost – YA Sci-fi Book Review & Giveaway

Welcome AJM Mousseau!

I had the great pleasure of reading Scars of The Bifrost. The young adult sci-fi romance is currently on tour and the author is awarding a $25 Amazon gift card and a copy of the novel to a lucky winner. If you would like, please enter the rafflecopter below.

Now, more about the novel:

Scars of the bifrost

Publication date: April 2013
Genres: YA paranormal/sci-fi romance
Synopsis:

Freya Catten has lived on the fringes of society her entire life, growing up in hiding with her mother in the deepest, wildest places left in North America—the national parks and forests. Freya’s mother taught her how to live off the land, away from civilization—mysteriously warning her of the dangers of getting involved with society and leaving traces of her DNA behind. But five years ago Freya’s mother abandoned her, leaving Freya to survive on her own.

Freya knows how to stay alive, whether she’s hiding in the forest or running on the city streets. She changes her appearance often and owns nothing but her backpack filled with survival gear and a necklace that had been her mother’s.

But, keeping one step ahead of Social Services isn’t her biggest fear. Freya’s true terror lies with The Takers—strange men who rappel from silver cords out of the deep blue sky from nowhere. They snatch up their victims then evaporate without a trace. Freya holds a dark suspicion—that the Takers are really after her, and they are closing in.

Freya realizes that if she is to ever have a normal life she must first find her mother and answer the questions that have kept her in hiding. Along the way, she meets Theron Hawk—a rugged teenage soldier from a war-torn country—and finds herself truly trusting someone for the first time in her life.

As secrets are uncovered, and Freya comes closer to solving the mysteries surrounding her life, her blood and the priceless necklace that lays at her throat, the scars of the Bifrost will threaten to rip apart Freya’s very existence.

 ~~~
SCARS OF THE BIFROST is the first story in The Scars Saga and is a Young Adult science-fiction/fantasy/paranormal romance novel infused with wilderness survival, urban fantasy, dystopian elements and mythological realism.
My Thoughts
So, do you like to read sci-fi? In all honesty, I wasn’t sure that I did. I generally gravitate toward paranormal and historical fiction. I surprised myself when I started reading Scars of the Bifrost and couldn’t put it down.
Feya Catten lives on the fringes of society, never staying in one place for very long and often sleeping in the forest. She is also alone. Her mother left her and disappeared five years earlier. It seems everywhere Freya goes the “Takers” – men in jumpsuits who repel from the sky on silver cords – snatch up innocent bystanders and disappear forever. Freya knows they’re looking for her, but she doesn’t understand why. With the unexpected help of a young traveling soldier, named Theron, Freya narrowly escapes a “Taker” attack. The two begin traveling/hiding together and discover that even though they may be from completely different worlds, their souls speak to one another.
Freya and Theron’s adventures to New Orleans, Homochitto National Forest, Stockholm, and much more (I don’t want to give too much away) were packed full of action, danger, and excitement.  Their relationship grows stronger and sweeter as they face one challenge after another. By the end of Scars I was completely engrossed in the story and wanted/needed to know how it was all going to pan out. Would Freya ever be united with her missing mother and who are the Takers and why do they abduct young people????
The author does a great job with the suspense but also left me hanging just enough to have to read the next book!  Scars of the Bifrost is an entertaining and imaginative  young adult science fiction tale and I will absolutely be waiting for the 2nd book in this series.
Overall: Action packed adventure with great drama and sweet first love….. 4.5 stars.
(Please note: In the copy I was given, the editing had not been completed. As far as I know, the latest version has been fully edited. Please don’t hold it against me if I am mistaken about this.)
A Teaser for you
The song ended too quickly. “Can you play it again?” Theron asked anxiously.
I nodded, happy he was so pleased. “As many times as you want,” I assured him and played it again and again.
The third time through I asked, “Would you like to dance?”
“I’ve never danced before.” His voice was slightly unsteady. I had watched him throw a knife with deadly accuracy into the flesh of an opponent with no hesitation, and now he was going to be nervous?
I stood over him and offered my hand. He took it and got to his feet. I positioned myself about a ruler’s length in front of him, then held my breath as I closed the gap.
“You place your hands here.” I put both of his hands on my hips.
“I like dancing already,” he said with a smile that filled even his eyes.
“Don’t be fresh,” I scolded playfully. Then I put both of my hands onto his shoulders.
“Now, I definitely like this.”
I smiled. I liked it too.
“Now we sway.” I gently rocked us back and forth and moved my feet nice and slowly.
He checked his stance and loosened up when he realized he had tensed. He looked into my face with an expression I couldn’t name. Then he closed his eyes and sunk his fingers deeply into the muscles at my waist. The action took my breath away.
Intensity. The expression on his face had been intensity.
I closed my eyes, feeling it too, and involuntarily slipped my hands up onto the nape of his neck—my fingers tangled into his dark, loose hair.
What are you doing? But the music continued to play, and I had been so broken—and obviously so had he. He was strong and overwhelming, and for this moment … just for this one moment, I wanted to allow myself to get lost in his arms, lost in his power. It was—just a song—just a moment.
“New Year’s Resolutions:
As Chessie’s obsession with Lloyd reaches boiling point and she starts to spin a web of lies that spiral out of control, Lloyd turns out to be not quite the prince she thought he was. Can Chessie avoid the gathering storm before things go too far?
~~~~~~~
Excerpt

In technology that afternoon, I’m not concentrating on the block of wood I’m supposed to be sawing, and I don’t even realise I’m still moving the saw until Debs clicks her fingers in my face and says, “Chessie, what are you doing?”

Oops.

I look down and the saw is halfway through the workbench. It’s embedded. In fact, it’s downright stuck. I pull and wiggle it but it won’t come out.

Oh, hell. Why do I always manage to mess something up?

I stick my hand up in the air and hope the teacher won’t make a scene about it. It was an accident, after all. I really don’t need Lloyd thinking that this is another lesson that I’m totally incompetent in. Is it too much to ask that he might think I’m good at something? Even just one thing?

“Miss Clemenfield?” Mr Vale asks in his most patronising voice.

“Sir, I, um, had a little accident,” I say, stepping back so he can see the saw that’s gone right through the wooden workbench.

“Oh dear. A little overzealous with the sawing, were we?”

“I’m sorry,” I say. “I thought I was still doing my block. My mind was somewhere else.”

“Thinking about boys, no doubt, eh? I know what kids your age are like.”

I’m just about to put in that I was actually thinking about ways to improve our technology lessons when suddenly Mr Vale’s voice is booming around the classroom.

“Everybody, gather round,” he’s saying, and gesturing with his hand to come over to our table.

Thirty students gather around us. I can feel Lloyd’s imposing frame right behind me. If I leaned back a little I’d be touching him. I wish I had the courage to do that. I wish we were friends. I wish he’d comfort me and tell me that it doesn’t matter that I’ve embarrassed myself yet again and the teacher is making a scene about it. But I don’t really get a chance, because Mr Vale prods me out of the way a little too forcefully, and I fall off my stool. I go to grab something to hold me up, and horror of horrors, I grab at the one thing that I never wanted to meet with in this way.

I have grabbed Lloyd Layton’s crotch.

Oh, crap.

The entire class is practically rolling on the floor in fits of giggles, and up until now, I would have thought it humanly impossible to turn red so fast.

It occurs to me that it might be a good idea to let go, and I drop my hand and jump back like I’ve been burnt.

Even the teacher is laughing. I don’t dare to look up at Lloyd, but I would imagine he’s gone bright red too. At least he’s not laughing like all the others.

“Sorry,” I mumble in an upward direction, and settle myself back on my stool, trying in vain to hide my head in my hands.

“That’s enough excitement for one day,” Mr Vale says finally, even though he’s still giggling himself. “I just wanted you all to see what happens when someone like Miss Clemenfield pays more attention to Mr Layton’s work than to her own.”

Crap. He noticed that?

Oh well, I don’t see what it matters because my face cannot get any redder right now.

Eventually the class file away and Mr Vale removes the saw from the bench and hands it back to me with a grin. I sneak a glance over towards Lloyd. There is a definite hint of a blush in his cheeks.

Great, not only do I embarrass myself beyond belief but I make him feel bad too.

Perfect.

“At least you can’t say he hasn’t noticed you anymore,” Debs whispers.

“Thank you. That makes me feel so much better.”

Not Pretty Enough is a contemporary young adult comedy suitable for ages thirteen and over.
Book two in the series will be released early 2014.
