So far, great reviews for Psyched!

This is one of those books you just can’t put down. What I
love about Psyched in addition to a great, spooky story is strong characters
and narrative voice. Aisi is the most awesome chick, strong-willed, sassy, and
deals with some crazy stuff happening with a spunkiness that I loved…
Psyched is well-written, riveting, surprising and genre-busting. Teens will love this book, but it definitely has a more wide-ranging appeal.”
and…
Aisi Turay is one awesome girl. She
has power to see the dead…as in their souls…This is a great read, filled
with suspense. I NEVER knew from one chapter to the next what was happening. It
is well written and a very enjoyable…and a bit scary!

About Psyched

Psyched is part ghost story, part suspense, part demon-hunting thriller, part budding romance. It’s the story of a girl named Aisi who’s doing her best to keep it together for her wreck of a family. She is smart, sassy, and sarcastic enough to keep things interesting. When she meets Vance on the single worst day of her life, she finds a guy who just might be the first person ever to get her, to believe in her, and to out-random her with bizarre observations at the worst possible moment. There’s just something about him that she knows she can trust.

Together, Aisi and Vance wander through the memories of others to unlock the secrets of her past while battling a demon who wants to ensure she never finds what she’s looking for. Aisi vanquishes demons all the time, but Malus Indolus is too strong. And he has plans for her…and her family.

Psyched is Juli’s second novel, the first as an indie writer,
and her first experiment with her true love as a reader: paranormal
fiction. Her debut novel Beyond Perfection is also available.

You can find Juli on Twitter, Facebook,  and her blog.

Excerpt

“What was that thing, and how did you get it to go away?” he persisted.

Aisi took a deep breath. She glanced over her shoulder to ensure their mother was still asleep, although she didn’t need to. The woman was still snorting and moaning down the hall. “Before I can answer your question, I need you to pinky swear that you’ll never tell anyone what I say. If you breathe one word of this, I’ll paint your toenails hot pink in your sleep and give you an atomic wedgie every day for the next eighty-five years. And I’ll tell all your friends you play with dolls. Got it?”

Leo’s eyes widened, but he nodded and extended his scrawny pinky toward her. She grabbed it decisively with her own. “Okay. The pinky swear is official. This stuff is legit. You break this and I can sue.” She thought a minute, trying to decide where to start. “Is that the first time you saw that dark shadow, Leo? Or have you seen it before?”

“That’s the night terror,” he said simply, and Aisi closed her eyes with a shake of her head. Her mom had told them for months that night terrors were nothing more than bad dreams. He would grow out of them eventually, she promised. That promise to her kid was just as worthless as everything else she said.

Leo continued, swallowing hard and looking as terrified as he had the night before. He whispered to her, as if speaking about the night terror aloud would call it back to him. “It comes sometimes, and I scream because it won’t stop growling at me and then it goes away when Mom comes in. Sometimes I see other stuff, too. Kind of like people but…” He struggled to find the right words in his limited kindergarten vocabulary. “But kind of foggy, too. They can talk to me. They’re mostly nice, but the night terror growls at me. He laughs when I cry.” Tears filled his big brown eyes, but he rubbed them angrily on his sleeve. “Can you teach me how to make it go away?”

Aisi reached over and affectionately rubbed the tight curls on his mostly buzzed head. “Yeah. I can. First you need to know what they are. The foggy people…those are ghosts. They’re okay, mostly just annoying. They’re sort of lost, but you can help them not be lost anymore.”

She pursed her lips, remembering the whiner in bobby socks who wouldn’t let her sleep last night. A faint horn sounded in the distance as she thought, but she ignored it as she looked out the window and down the long gravel driveway that led from their dilapidated house to the two-lane highway leading to town. “You just have to tell them to look for a light. I never see it, but they always do. Then they go away.” ‘Go toward the light’ was cliché, but effective.

“I want to make the night terror go away,” Leo said.

She sighed. “That one is a little trickier. It takes work. That thing you call a night terror? That’s a demon. They’re pretty hard to get rid of. Once they decide they want to scare you, they keep scaring you. Fear is like…” Her eyes rested on the box of cereal between them. “…Fear is like chocolate frosted sugar bombs to a demon. They like the taste of it, you know? They’d eat it all day if we let them, but we can’t ever let them know we’re scared. That’s where they get their power.”

Blogger Book Fair Welcomes Zrinka Jelic

Welcome Zrinka Jelic!

Ms. Jelic is here to tell you about her novels and she is also doing a giveaway. Read more to find out the details.

Hello Blogger Book Fair hoppers

I’m very delighted to meet you. My name is Zrinka Jelic and I’m author of three published books, Bonded by Crimson, a paranormal romance, and Treasured Chest, a historical romance. Plus my work appears in an anthology titled Angles Cried dedicated to tiny victims of unimaginable and senseless violence of Sandy Hook School.

Today I’d like to talk about my newest release, a time travel romance titled “Love Remains”. It was published by Crimson Romance on July 15th.

It is dedicated to all women, but especially working kind. It takes a lot of skill and energy to juggle career and family, and to keep going day in and day out. When kids are sick and we have to stay at home with our little ones, we face the employer’s scrutiny and in some cases even losing jobs. The treatment of working mothers in the corporations got me thinking and I’ve decided to show my findings (at least the way I was treated when faced with the issue) through my writing. And since I am a romance writer, what best way to do it than through romance. Of course, being of Croatian descent, I have to throw something Croatian in the mix. Would you sacrifice your family for the sake of your career? Is it OK for corporations to dispose of women who put their families before their jobs? Is there a golden middle?

I hope you’ll find “Love Remains” a thrilling read as I found it when I wrote it.

Here’s the book’s blurb

Olivia Owen, a busy, single, high-functioning, corporate executive officer, is not afraid to die a spinster for the sake of her career. But in an alternate reality world, bridged by the angel of her Down’s syndrome sister, she meets Tom Medar, a dedicated, Croatian defense attorney who dreams of the right woman, but never has time to find her. Together they foil an adulterous murder plot while discovering there’s room for love and family in their busy lives—but not before they are separated again.

When they awaken from their alternate world, will they be able to cross countries to find each other again?

Love Remains is now available on Amazon

Also, there’s a little giveaway on my blog and since I’m in Canada I’ll have to make it digital. So a copy of Love Remains for your e-reader and $5.00 Amazon gift card. Just drop by my blog Hello Romance and leave me a comment, join my blog or like my Facebook page.

And a bit about me

A member of MEthe Romance Writers of America and its chapter Fantasy Futuristic & Paranormal, as well as Savvy Authors, she writes contemporary fiction—which leans toward the paranormal—and adds a pinch of history. Her characters come from all walks of life, and although she prefers red, romance comes in many colors. Given Jelic’s love for her native Croatia and the Adriatic Sea, her characters usually find themselves dealing with a fair amount of sunshine, but that’s about the only break they get. “Alas,” Jelic says, with a grin. “Some rain must fall in everyone’s life.”

Colour Wielders

Chapter One: Virgin Territory

Gentle fingertips grazed the edge of her jaw, trailing down her neck to her collarbone. His vitrine gaze stared deeply into her eyes, and her body heated at his tender touch.

“You’re okay, yeah?” Thaene asked, his voice hoarse from their lovemaking.

Am I okay? She hardly knew. Though she had nothing to compare it to, this feeling was more than giving her virginity to him. Quinn felt like something bigger inside stirred to life, wanting to escape.

“You know I love you. I’m sorry if it hurt.” He kissed her again, his lips caressing hers as if he could take the ache away. “Say something, Quinn. Please.”

“I love you, Thaene.” She pressed herself into him, passionately returning his affection. As their kiss continued, Quinn wondered if he wanted more. She also wondered if she had more to give.

“I want us together always. Do you want that, Quinn?” Thaene’s eyes danced with a mixture of emotions—love, passion, possessiveness, and something else she couldn’t name.

“We can have forever. You want that, don’t you?” Thaene asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered breathlessly before realizing what she’d agreed to. She smiled, finding his need for her exciting. “Forever is a long time. But I could do it with you.”

Thaene smiled back. Happiness lit his face. He looked like he’d just won a major prize—he looked triumphant.

“Being with you on your birthday was very special to me. You’ve given me such a precious gift.”

“I love you. I can’t imagine my first time with anyone else.”

Besides, my gift of Sight showed you to me, over and over. How could I not give myself to you?

Her gift had shown her something else as well. Since she didn’t understand it, Quinn ignored it. She’d followed her heart where Thaene was concerned. Not even her mother’s dislike—or in spite of it— changed her mind. Following your heart always led you down the right path.

Thaene lightly brushed her hair from her face, then he rested his forehead on hers.

“There’s something else I’d like you to give me. Will you do that? Give me what I desire the most?”

The longing in his voice made Quinn squirm underneath him. Right now, she’d give him anything.

“It’s the most precious gift of all. One I’ll cherish forever.”

Oh my God. He wants to marry me.

“Yes,” Quinn said, drawing in a breath. “I’ll give you anything.”

“Good.” Thaene nuzzled her neck. “I want you to show me your Magyk.”

Just Breathe Excerpt:

I walk slowly into class, early like normal. I would rather be early and watch Michael come in than vice versa. I hate that feeling, when you walk in and everyone is staring at you. I would rather be the one doing the staring. I take my seat towards the back. The seat to the left of me is always empty, now that Michael has found a new spot. The other three sides are all occupied. Sasha to my right is a pretty good friend, so we start up a conversation about the impending game and our predictions for the outcome.

Our teacher, Mr. Griggs walks in and greets us so I turn to face the front and notice in my peripheral vision the seat to my left is not empty, as it should be. No, Did Michael come back? I‘m scared to look. My heart starts to speed up. Slyly I turn my head to the left letting my hair fall into my eyes to mask my glance. My heart stops and my breath catches. It’s him, the boy from the lake. He has ear buds on and he doesn’t notice my glance. I turn the other way quickly and realize I am going to hyperventilate or faint. Ok Ever, you really didn’t see anything, there really is some logical explanation as to why this boy’s hands lit up like a Christmas tree in broad daylight. Calm down.

Then I hear Mr. Griggs drone on about a new student. What? What did he say? I totally missed it. As I glance over to the left, the boy is just sitting back down after being introduced and our eyes meet. He smiles and I blush feeling warmth spread through my face down my neck. Wow, his eyes, he is gorgeous. I keep staring unable to break the lock of his eyes. They are the bluest eyes I have ever seen. They look like the color I would imagine the ocean to be.

Suddenly I hear my name.

“Ever Harding,” Mr. Griggs says loudly.

I break my trance and glance around, all the eyes around are on me, I stammer, “Um, Yes Mr. Griggs?”

I sink further down into my seat. “Ever, can you please pair up with Mr. Tanner and show him the assignments for this week?”

“Um yes, Mr. Griggs,” I mumble.

Sasha bumps me with her elbow and asks, “What was that, you just phased out there for a sec.”

I just shrug my shoulders hoping not to draw any more attention. Tanner, I think, what is his first name? I glance over at him and he has a confused, almost frown on his face staring straight at me. There’s that warmth again. I look forward suddenly, maybe my mom was right and I am coming down with something. I put my hand on my forehead to feel for a fever, nope pretty normal.

I lean over towards the new boy, without meeting his eyes and ask, “Um, sorry I didn’t get your first name.”

He backs away and stutters like I surprised him, “It…It’s  Jack.”

Then he glances the other way as if trying to avoid eye contact.

I lean over and whisper, “I have fourth period study hall in the library at twelve, can we meet then to…ah, catch you up on the assignments?”

He just nods without looking at me and looks up at Mr. Griggs. He doesn’t glance my way again throughout the rest of the class. When the bell rings, I look over and he’s gone. I think I’m going crazy. Where is Gabbi when I need her?

Second period creaks slowly by, of course because I want to be somewhere else. I practically run to English Lit and see Gabbi talking to Reggie. Lucky me, now I have to share her during our only class together. I sit down and she glances toward me smiling but does a double take when she sees my face.

Blogger Book Fair Welcomes Kate Lutter

Hi. My name is Kate Lutter, and I’m super excited to be a part of Blogger Book Fair 2013 and to showcase my debut novel Wild Point Island, and a fabulous Give-away:

I write a blog called Black and White (how the fictional world impacts the real world and your comment will be part of a survey I’m currently conducting.)

I never would have published Wild Point Island if I hadn’t broken a few rules along the way.

P1010542_2

I was never one for breaking the rules.  I was the kid in school who always did her homework.  Who always arrived on time for school. Who took notes.  Studied for tests.  I was that kind of person.

When I became a writer, I still followed the rules.  Why wouldn’t I? I believed that rules prevent chaos, make the world a better place.  One of the most important rules was—never pitch a book that you’re writing to an editor until you’re finished writing it.  NEVER.

But after writing four novels and not selling them, I grew suspicious that the ideas I was writing about were not marketable. And then one day . . . last year . . . I did the unthinkable.

I was at a writing conference and I signed up for an appointment with a top New York editor of a publishing house I respected even though I was only 100 pages into writing my current novel.

Now this isn’t a good idea on many levels, but I convinced myself that I needed to know whether the idea of the story was marketable.

I had the title: Wild Point Island.

I had the genre: paranormal romance

And I had the story idea—a love story where two people want to be together but they can’t because it’s physically impossible.

Yes, I’ll admit it—I was addicted to True Blood—HBO’s hot drama and was a Sookie and Bill fan.  I loved the idea of Bill (a vampire) falling for Sookie (a half human, half fairy). It was a relationship doomed from the start.  Bittersweet.  And I’d drafted a romance modeled on a similar concept.

My hero, a revenant, who was once human, was now a different life form.  He’d returned from the dead.  He was 420 years old and was condemned to live his very long life on Wild Point Island.  My heroine was half human/half revenant.  She lived on the mainland, in North Carolina.

They were both descendants of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, an original English colony that was settled in 1592, but then disappeared when the mother ship returned to England for supplies. This was my hook, and I wanted to see if it was hook enough to sell a book.

If the editor were interested, she would request at most a partial—the first three chapters—if she requested anything at all–and that would give me time to finish the book, and then I would know that I had a marketable idea.

So I marched into my appointment to do a very wrong thing. I pitched the story I hadn’t finished and waited for her reaction.  In a pitch session with an editor at a conference you have ten minutes to sell your story. Some writers crack under the pressure.  They become tongue-tied.  They stare down at their notes, and the words swim before their eyes.

To my shock and amazement, the editor responded immediately.  She knew all about the Lost Colony of Roanoke.  She’d vacationed down in North Carolina as a child.  She loved the idea.  And then she lowered the boom. The good news. What every writer who pitches wants to hear—She requested the entire manuscript.

She referred, of course, to the story I hadn’t yet finished.

I smiled and said, “Of course.  No problem.” I was doomed.

Back home, my husband said, “Just finish it then.”

Two hundred pages in a month?  I would have to write ten pages a day straight for twenty days which would give me roughly two hundred pages and then, I would need ten days to edit. Already I was sweating.

The next day I signed up online for Book In A Month.  I set myself a schedule. I grew determined to finish the book.

It was ugly and beautiful at the same time, and I learned two things from the experience.  One—I could write incredibly fast when I wanted to.  For the first time in my life, I entered into what writers call “the zone.”  When you write intently everyday for long periods of time, you know your story so well, you do enter into the special world of your story, and it does get easier.  Two—I never broke that rule again. I finished. I edited. And I submitted.

And it was rejected.

It wasn’t until months later when I had a chance to rewrite the story that I was able to sell it.

Wild Point Island was published by Crescent Moon Press in 2012.          It’s now available from Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com in print and e book formats.

As for Wild Point Island, the back cover blurb reads:

Banished from Wild Point Island as a child, Ella Pattenson, a half human-half revenant, has managed to hide her true identity as a descendent of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.  Thought to have perished, the settlers survived but were transformed into revenants–immortal beings who live forever as long as they remain on the island.

Now, Ella must return to the place of her birth to rescue her father from imprisonment and a soon to be unspeakable death.  Her only hope is to trust a seductive revenant who seems to have ties to the corrupt High Council.  Simon Viccars is sexy and like no man she’s ever met. But he’s been trapped on the island for 400 years and is willing to do almost anything for his freedom.

With the forces of the island conspiring against her, Ella must risk her father, her heart, and her life on love.

Review – Blood, She Read by Sara Hubbard

Blood, She Read

First I would like to say that I love the cover art. The colors and design are beautiful. This novel grabbed my attention the first moment I saw it and I had to buy it.

Then I started reading Blood, She Read and I was immediately hooked into the story and the character’s plight. Petra is a blood witch with amazing powers that she doesn’t quite have a grip on, and she doesn’t want to either. She is also a teenager with a screwed up family. The relationship between the main character, Petra Maras, and her mother was quite different and really entertaining to read. Petra’s mother is immature and quite abusive, but I got a sense right away that there was a lot of depth of emotions and history between these two. Petra’s father is even worse, which is why Petra and her mom live by themselves in a big Victorian house far far away on the coast of Nova Scotia. From the first few chapters I was wondering and hoping Petra and her mother would resolve their conflicts and the author doesn’t disappoint. This plot point in the novel was touching, believable, and not cheesy.

The other characters were really well written – the paranormal creatures (I won’t give away anymore than that), the cop, the best friend, and the enemies. I was amused by all of them. Petra’s crush, Finn, is definitely my favorite.  He’s sexy cool and sort of aloof but isn’t afraid to lay it all out there when it comes to telling Petra how he feels. He’s most definitely swoon worthy.

Ms. Hubbard has crafted a stellar YA paranormal romance packed with mystery, action, and plenty of entertaining magic.

*5 magical stars for Blood, She Read*

Blurb:

Keeping secrets from a psychic can be murder.

Petra Maras lives a charmed life, but only in the magical sense. Her absentee father is a criminal, her mother is emotionally dead, and everyone at her new school knows she comes from a family of witches. All she wants is to be normal, but that’s impossible, given her family. And given that she’s psychic. When the police request help with a murder investigation, Petra reluctantly agrees. Which isn’t such a good idea since the prime suspect wants to date her, and she really wants to say yes. Her gut says he’s innocent, but since she can’t get a read on him, she can’t know for sure. And when she discovers he’s been keeping secrets, she wonders if maybe she’s been following her heart instead of her head…

About the Author:

Sara Hubbard is the author of young adult books. Her debut novel BLOOD, SHE READ Sara Hubbardreleases fall 2012 and is a NEORWA Cleveland Rocks winner and a RCRW Duel on the Delta finalist. RomCon 2013 Update

I know, I know. RomCon was last weekend and it is already Friday again. How does almost an entire week go by before updating my blog? Good question. It could be the never ending family obligations, or the T-ball games, or my many other work related i_love_romcon_badgeinterruptions, but really it is all of the above.

So, RomCon was absolutely spectacular. There were so many amazing authors there. My head is still swimming with fan girl giddiness and the many names of authors and new friends.

Some of you may know that I had to sit on a panel about New Adult and Young Adult novels and that I was more nervous than I have been – probably ever. Well, my stress was for nothing. The chat went smoothly and I had the great honor to sit with some truly great authors.  Want to know who? I wish all of you could have been there, but since there wasn’t room for a few thousand people, I talked NA/YA with Gena Showalter, Alexis Alexander, Molly McAdams, Rachel Van Dyken, JM Kline, and my fellow CMP author, Courtney Farrell. It was a new experience and really not that bad. I guess my feeling of needing to vomit in the bathroom from nerves wasn’t necessary after all. I also sat through a Speed Date an Author – which was fun – and signed books in the book signing, which was awesome!

My only other news to report is the Breast Cancer Research raffle raised $2,045!!! Thanks again to the lovely authors who donated items to the basket I put together!  And thanks to the coordinators and volunteers who make RomCon happen every year. I hope I can attend next year.

RomCon is Here at Last

After waiting for eight months, RomCon is finally here. Yes, I did sign up early even i_love_romcon_badgethough I knew nothing about the reader’s conference. I heard about the conference from some writer friends and decided, why not? The conference is in Colorado Springs this year and I have a new release to share with the world. RomCon is for romance readers of every genre. Many amazing authors will be attending as well. For three days, readers, fans, and authors will be celebrating books, books, and more books. There are events all day long and late into the night.

This year I will be meeting a lot of new people and hopefully a few fans. If you are attending, I will be at the Speed Date a New Author on Friday from 1:00 – 1:55 pm. And, on Saturday I will be having a discussion about Young Adult & New Adult novels and authors from 11:20 – 12:10.

The book signings during RomCon are open to the public. So even if you are not attending all weekend, you can drop in and have your book signed by a favorite author.

Here are the times:  Friday, 21st  4:30 – 5:45

I’ll be signing on     Saturday, 22nd  3:50 – 5:20

Here are a few of the activities at this year’s RomCon
