RomCon 2014!

Well, it’s that time of year. Conferences are in full swing and awards are being given to outstanding authors and amazing novels. RomCon has its own awards: The Readers’ Crown. And, guess what? Death Lies Between Us is up for Best First Book & best Paranormal Romance! going_to_2014

I suppose I might be a little excited – *wink*.  This is yet another first for me in the publishing world and wow, I am a humbled author. There are countless ups and downs in this profession, let me tell you, but the news that my first novel made it to the finalist list was a bright and shining career moment when I really needed one.

So, I signed up for RomCon at the last minute after cancelling plans to be out of state and finding a babysitter who is willing to stay with my boy for more hours than anyone should ever have to ask of their sitter.

I hope to see some of you on Friday 20th! (I will only be attending one day this year) The book signing will be from 7-8:30pm Friday night & is open to the public!

Where is this happening? Glad you asked…Crowne Plaza, Denver. There are so many amazing authors signing books this year. You can find out all the details at RomCon.com

There are still some fan tickets left and the book signings are free!

I will have limited paperback copies to sign, so if you can bring your own copy, that would be handy 🙂 Thanks & I hope to see you next Friday!

Oh, and wish my book luck! If I win, my prize will be to attend RomCon 2015! Plus a bunch of other great perks. I can’t express how grateful I am to the readers who rated my book. A million thanks wouldn’t be enough!   Cheers,     Jody

Endured

Here is the back cover blurb:

Princess Arianna rises up to defend the women of the Gaspar from the men who made her a victim. Her pain is raw. Her need for the one man out of her reach is vicious. She must save the Gaspar women and prove her worth to a kingdom who questions her strength.

The Head Guard, Reid, depends on his control to tame the darkness inside him because his secrets are better locked away. Only one woman holds the key to breaking him completely. His loyalty is first to the king. Or is it? Ari has the power to bring him to his knees. With his inevitable death by the shadows looming on the horizon, he can’t afford to fall.

King Valerian grants the Gaspar women sanctuary. But the Gaspar men won’t stop fighting until every Shadow Shifter is dead. One side won’t survive the battle.

Chapter One

In her whole royal, privileged, stifled life, Ari couldn’t remember ever being this bored. The Court members droned on about this and that, posh and circumstance. Their tones pitched high. The subject matter was droll. She rolled her eyes with her usual dramatic sigh. These men and women really needed to take a romp through the shadows to liven their moods.

“The villagers should pay us with goods for their right to live within the walls of this kingdom, as well as the Varner,” a rigid sitting woman said with her pointed nose aimed toward the tall windows.

“Absolutely not,” King Vale said. Ari’s brother’s staunch devotion to the happiness of their people rarely failed to amuse her.

It did today, after hours of listening to this drivel. The attitudes of the Court members left a sour taste in her mouth.

“Our duty is to protect the people, not obligate them,” Vale said.

Nothing he hadn’t already stated five times. Not that the Court listened with their less than receptive ears. So boring. She scowled at her brother, the man responsible for her being in this room.

Her chair scratched against the tile floor as she pushed away from the long table. The attention of the room snapped toward her. She sprang to her feet, and her long nails dug into the flesh of her palms.

She tilted her chin up under the scrutiny. “I object.”

Vale frowned at her from his throne. “What do you object to now, dear sister?” His less than endearing tone only encouraged her bad behavior.

Sweeping her arms around to include all the heavily spice-scented, self-serving pompous members, she gestured emphatically. “I object to all of this.”

A deep sigh escaped the king. “Ari, you wanted more responsibility.”

What she wanted was to be understood. Apparently, that was too much to ask for. “I wanted to find a purpose. Joining the Court is not my purpose.”

“I think we can all agree to that,” an uppity man chirped in.

Ari skewered him with a glare as sharp and deadly as the dagger she wore strapped to her thigh. The man cowered under her attention. Served him right for interrupting a conversation that was obviously between siblings.

“I don’t know what you want.” Her brother’s tired words made her cringe.

That was the whole problem. She didn’t know what she wanted either. If she didn’t figure it out soon, she’d go mad. Some already claimed she was mad, but she just considered herself festive.

“The Gaspar men will come back for their women.” The deep, familiar voice froze her in place. She glanced back at the man she detested above all others. The Head Guard, Reid, stared at her, not even blinking. He dismissed her, focusing on her brother again. Reid was always dismissing her.

“We must protect the kingdom.” Reid moved closer and brought with him the sweat drenched robes and hardened muscles of a well-exercised Warrior. Not that Ari cared about the way the fabric clung to his massive biceps.

The Court grumbled, already tired of this old fight.

Several fortnights had passed since the Gaspar invaded their kingdom. But Reid kept insisting the men would come back for the women who her brother had given temporary sanctuary to.

“Those men ran scared,” Ari said. “Why do you keep saying they’ll come back? We have no proof.”

Reid’s gaze skimmed over her again, before dismissing her without words. She really hated when he did that.

Lucky’s Break by Jenn Nixon

Let’s take a look at the new release by Jenn Nixon – Lucky’s Break, romantic suspense from Wild Child Publishing.

Lucky's Break M

After almost losing her Uncle Phen during the investigation of her mother’s murder, Felicia “Lucky” Fascino cut all ties and ran away, hoping her family would move on and forget the promises they made. Putting the past behind her has never been easy, but Lucky knows the job is slowly destroying her already fractured psyche. Staying away, especially now that her family is in danger, is the only way to keep everyone safe.

Kenji Zinn, determined to locate his ex-lover, tracks Lucky to a small island with her family’s help, and finds her in a miserable and self-destructive condition. His connection to her is strained after months apart but his feelings haven’t change, and he attempts to persuade her to come home, to protect her family and keep her promise. Despite her obvious mental fatigue, only Phen is able to convince her that the way to get closure is finding an elusive man named Quimby and take him out permanently.

Once home, Lucky breaks it off with Kenji, and agrees to go back to work if Phen promises to let her go when it’s done. While her family continues to track their target, Lucky returns to work for the network—struggling through each job, aware that pushing her family away won’t bring anyone the peace they deserve. As she begins to repair her shattered relationships, her true feelings for Kenji are tested when she almost loses him completely. Before it’s too late, Lucky realizes he’s her best ally to help her finish what she started and find Quimby before he strikes again.

Excerpt from Lucky’s Break

Lucky and Kenji regroup after taking out an obstacle…

“That’s about as bad as it gets. Most of my marks are from a distance,” Lucky said with a shrug of her shoulders. “Up close and I tend to get….”

“Forceful.”

“Brutal, Kenji. I wanted him to hurt. I had to walk away, afraid I was going to pummel him just for the hell of it.” Her body shuddered under his hands.

“You were not brutal. You did what you needed to do.”

“I didn’t need to kill him. I wanted to.” She stepped back out of his grasp and walked to the bed. “I’m not some sadistic fuck who gets off on hurting people, but sometimes…and with you there this time….” When she sat down, she pulled her legs to her chest. “Everything that happened yesterday, being with you in the field and letting you see me that way….”

“The last few days have been taxing,” he said, sitting beside her. She reached the edge of every thought but held back, afraid to speak her mind. He kept his distance despite the desire to hold her.

“I’m still trying to wade through it all.” She put her head on her knees. “What were you thinking, after I killed him?”

“I thought you extracted all you could from him and finished the job.”

She turned her head to face him, seemingly agitated. “Then what were you feeling?”

“Satisfied it was over and impressed with your methods.”

Felicia huffed, got up from the bed, and started to walk away. He grabbed her wrist. “Let go.”

He held tighter and stood. “What do you want to know, Felicia? Stop being vague.”

“How did you feel toward me?” Her voice was heated, sharp. “You were watching me like a hawk.”

“Mostly, I admired your abilities and thought of little else. There were moments I felt intimidated, other times aroused. Watching you overpower and manipulate that man was invigorating.”

“Why were you intimidated?”

“The way you handled the situation astounds me. I was not needed, yet you allowed me to help.”

She broke from his grip and walked to the opposite side of the room. He stood, silently waiting to see what she’d do. Rubbing the back of her neck, she turned around with wide eyes.

“After all that, you still want me.”

“I have never wanted you more.”

Sounds pretty great, doesn’t it? Find out more here:

My Kind of Crazy by Katie O’Sullivan

I had the pleasure of reading Katie O’Sullivan’s newest release, My Kind of Crazy, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys puppies, beach reads, or sweet romance.

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Well Written, Sweet, & Entertaining

Kendall Roarke’s life is already hectic as she works day and night building her new business as a wedding coordinator and venue hostess at her bed and breakfast. When she volunteers to foster a trouble-making puppy and keeps running into the same hot guy on the Cape, she quickly gets entangled into a new “kind of crazy” lifestyle. Throw in a few well-meaning friends, a snotty uptight neighbor, and an ex-husband that deserves a good throttling and you have a whirlwind romance with a disaster waiting to happen around every corner.

My Kind of Crazy is a sweet contemporary romance about two divorcees discovering love and trust in one another as they build a new relationship on Cape Cod. Complications of family and past relationships woven into the story build a strong plot and entertaining characters who are full of depth.

This story is well written and was hard for me to put down. It is entertaining in every way. A great setting, clear writing, and a believable plot with plenty of intrigue and suspense keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end. Putting all the technical excellence aside, who couldn’t fall in love with a strong heroine, a sexy vet, and a lovable, gigantic puppy named Midget?

Back Cover Blurb

For years, Calise Rowe has been able to sense unusual energy from people, making her believe she is different.  Pulled into an ancient war raging for centuries between demon hunters and seers, she’s about to find out she’s right.

Her search for the truth leads her to Lucas Rojas, a seer of angels and demons who walk the earth shrouded from normal human eyes.  He’s hidden his gift for years and refuses to endanger Calise by sharing it with her.

In the sultry Costa Rican Jungles, their worlds collide.  As their passion and desire ignite, so does the ancient war between demons and seers.  Will their combined efforts be enough to save themselves and the entire human world, or will their new found love be their downfall?

An excerpt to tease you:

She traced a circle in the sand with her finger.

Why would she disclose her whole existence to someone she’d just met? Someone who talked so little about himself that she found herself talking to fill the void. Saying things she could barely admit in her own head.

His hand covered hers. “I’m lonely, too. Getting to know you this week has been the brightest point in my life and I don’t want you to leave, but I know the only place you’ll be safe is far away from me.”

She swallowed. He had read her mind.

He lay down on his back and closed his eyes. “Cali, you know when you hear a song for the first time and you kind of ingest it? You can’t possibly know right away that it will be one of your favorite songs for the rest of your life. A classic.”

“Yeah.” She hoped he was going somewhere good with this.

“That first listen,” he continued, “you pick up a little of the melody and some lyrics that catch you. But when the song ends, you have to hear it again because you want to memorize all the words and sing along. After you hear it a few times and learn the words inside and out, then you begin to let the melody seep inside you. Next thing you know, you’ve completely digested the song and find yourself humming it while you are doing nothing, like shaving or driving your car. Finally, the song becomes so ingrained it becomes a part of you. Forever. You can recall it and it’s with you whenever you need it. Am I making any sense?”

She nodded, blinking back the tears fighting to fall.

“Cali, I don’t want you to go back because you’re my favorite song.”

Love Entwined By Danita Minnis – New Release

Today, guest author, Danita Minnis, is here to share her new release with us. Check it out and read the tantalizing excerpt below:

loveentwined final cover

Amelie’s goal is the top of the jewelry designing world. Her orderly life comes undone when jewelry tycoon Roman steals her away on assignment to a remote English estate. He wants Amelie all to himself but St. Clair Manor’s ghost has waited for her much longer than he has.

An unseen gunman takes a shot at Roman and he blames a business rival. But Amelie and Roman are to blame, for falling in love 200 years before in a time neither of them remember.

From the heartbreak of pre-Revolutionary France to modern day corporate wars, Amelie and Roman uncover a history of blood jewels, lust and demons.

When Amelie discovers her inner witch she learns the real reason she was summoned to St. Clair Manor. Il Dragone will kill to get her back. Amelie will kill if they do.

Love Entwined, A Cardiff Novel – Excerpt

Later that night, Amelie passed through the kitchen on her way to the pool.

She went through the gym, catching a glimpse of herself in the mirrored walls. She was a mermaid in the incandescent green two-piece with a diaphanous sarong. She loved it and would have bought it for herself except that it probably cost as much as one of her business suits. Work attire and jewelry were the only things she could see spending that kind of money on.

Roman had guessed her size. The man was an expert; he knew how to make a woman feel beautiful.

That was dangerous.

She was no match for his subtle prowess and he was too well versed in things she had not played at long enough to know her own capabilities.

When she opened the door, he was already in the pool swimming laps. She stood near one of the benches lining the walls. The underwater lights bathed the room in a bluish-green glow and illuminated his retreat. His strokes were long and powerful, breaking the silence and echoing in the cavernous room.

He swam toward her and she took off her flip-flops. She was the wallflower while he was…Godlike, more than a man should be. He climbed out of the water and stood in a puddle, pushing dark, wet curls out of his face. Her eyes followed the rivulets running down his chest over sculpted abs and finally over his feet. Everything about him was oversize.

He walked toward her in black swim trunks and her skin burned crimson as reality confirmed what her dreams had already conveyed; the man was superbly endowed.

“I see you found your way down.”

She wrapped her arms around her waist, and managed to stop just short of turning back the way she’d come. “I was watching you swim,” she said unnecessarily.

He grabbed a towel hanging on a hook. “You look beautiful.”

“Thank you for the swimsuit.”

“I should be thanking you.”

She stood mute, but unfolded her arms.

He gestured to the shower in the corner. “Why don’t you get wet? It will help you get accustomed to the water.”

Aware he was watching her while he dried off; she twisted the end of the wrap in her fingers.

He picked up a bottle of water and sat down, leaning against the tiled wall. He took a long drink before saying, “Of course you could always swim in it.”

“Of course not.” She took off the wrap and crossed over to the steady stream of water.

Closing her eyes, she blocked his eyes out of her mind, but still felt them as she turned in a slow circle under the stream sluicing her breasts. She felt his eyes as the water traveled down her waist, glancing off her hips in droplets that danced in puddles over her feet.

When she turned off the water, she felt much calmer.

He held out a bottle. “Water?”

“No, thank you. Do you want to get back in?”

“Your wish is my command, Beauty.”

He kept pace with her underwater. In a steady rhythm, he glided next to her. He needn’t have worried; she was a good swimmer.

They reached the other side and she started back the other way with the butterfly stroke. They swam together and met at the deep end, holding on to the side and facing each other.

She waved her legs in the water, feeling so much better after exercising away her nervous energy. “This is nice.”

“Where did that come from?”

“What?”

“That genuine smile on your face. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen that before.”

She made a face.

He grinned. “There is nothing like a few laps in the pool before bed. It helps clear my head.” He followed her line of vision to a beach ball floating nearby.

Grinning, she swam off in that direction. She held the ball up over her head and took aim.

He chuckled. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

Shaking one waterlogged lock of hair out of her face, she asked innocently, “And why is that?” She treaded further away, still brandishing her weapon.

“I might have to come after you.” He hadn’t finished his sentence before she threw the missile. It was close, but she missed. She looked around for something else to throw.

“Nothing but pool water left, Beauty.”

She treaded away. “It didn’t hit you.”

“Ah, but that was your intention, and now you will pay the price.” He dove underwater.

She squeaked and started swimming in earnest to the other side of the pool. By the time she saw him swimming underneath her it was too late. He rose up out of the water and grabbed her around the waist. She tried to get away, but weakened by laughter she stopped struggling and leaned against him.

He took her to the side of the pool and they caught their breath as their legs wove together. The gentle lapping of the water against their bodies broke the silence.

“Give me a few days’ practice and I’ll be chasing you.” She laughed up into his face, looking forward to it.

Roman wasn’t laughing. He moved closer and his lips brushed hers.

Feeling relaxed and exhilarated, she didn’t stop him, but parted her lips. He slipped his tongue into her mouth, rolling it over hers in long, lazy strokes. She slid gently into bliss as he deepened the kiss.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, and her nipples hardened against the hair on his chest.

When he cupped her buttocks and moved against her, a languid moan escaped her lips.

A novel should make you feel something. It should spark your imagination and grab your heartstrings. January Black does not disappoint and has so much more to offer than the casual page turner! It is a thought provoking puzzle intertwined with history, sweet first love, family secrets, and political dissension.

Matty Ducayn is an upper-class teen in the city of Aventine. After being expelled from school for outwitting his instructor, he is given a task by King Hadrian. Matty is quickly entangled in a behind the scenes, political exploitation of his intelligence, naiveté, willingness to bend, if not break the rules and laws that govern his world, all while falling deeply in love with Iris.

Although the novel is set in the future, I feel that the story is relevant to the present. The scenes are descriptive but not wordy. The future technology is imaginative but not farfetched. The characters are well written and relatable. The dialog extremely enjoyable. It is a fascinating tale where seekers of freedom and a new beginning end up with a government that sees and controls everything – or at least tries to.

Is Matty being unfairly manipulated, or is he part of a greater scheme for a better future? You’ll have to read it to find out.

I would like to add one humble note: I do not care for anyone to push their thoughts, opinions, or beliefs on me and this novel DOESN’T come across that way at all. It is a story. Well told and inspiring.

My only regret about January Black is that I didn’t read it sooner.
